Holes are formed by swirling action of water causing sand and small stones to gradually grind away the rock into smooth cavities, usually perfectly round. These fill with pebbles and small boulders, which continue the grinding action. Sund. 27th Jan. 1957. 11.25 a.m. Sun"

Reached valley at 12.15 p.m. today after hard battle through scrub and rough terrain down through gully opposite hotel. Had to camp in gully last night, about 1/4 mile or more from hotel. Clothes torn to pieces. Wed. 30th Jan. 1957. 1.20 p.m. Sun"
