Ground here very steep and rocky, and area from which photo was taken completely burnt out. Got very black and dirty. Much haze in river valley. Proceeded along high ground to top of Lander's Spur track, much of the country being burned all the way. Got dark shortly after reaching top of Spur Track. Holes are formed by swirling action of water causing sand and small stones to gradually grind away the rock into smooth cavities, usually perfectly round. These fill with pebbles and small boulders, which continue the grinding action. Sund. 27th Jan. 1957. 11.25 a.m. Sun"
