William Carnie was born in Levin, Fyfe, Scotland on 10 October 1905. He arrived in Australia on 24 December 1923 from Scotland on board the TSS Ballarat and worked in the agricultural industry in the Wagga area. He joined the Jehovah's Witnesses in the 1930s and died in Hong Kong on or about 3 April 1964.
In July 1907 Westbrook Public School was Half-time with Taradale School before becoming a Provisional School in February 1909. In January 1928 it became Half-time with Bago Lower School, then a Provisional School again in March 1938 and finally a Public School in November 1957 until March 1969.
The Empire Theatre was built in 1925 by Arthur Maslin. Maslin sold the theatre to Leo Smith in 1928. After changing hands several times, the Warran brothers purchasd the theatre in 1950 and operated it until 1965.
Warragoon School began as a Provisional School in July 1955 and remained as such until November 1957 when it became a Public School and remained so until its closure in December 1982.
Warburn School commenced as a Provisional School in November 1945 and remained as such until September 1955. It then became a Public School in October 1955 before its closure in March 1969.
Wantabadgery School began as a Half-time School with Clarendon in January 1879 and operated as such until September 1880. It then became a Provisional School in November 1881 before closing in May 1884. It re-opened as a Provisional School in January 1895 and continued until February 1904. It then became a Half-time School with Clarendon from March 1904 until September 1904 when it once again became a Provisional School from October 1904 until December 1914. It finally became a Public School January 1915 and remained so until its closure in December 1971.
Walleroobie Provisional School operated from September 1913 until December 1915 before it became a Public School in January 1916 and then closed in1943. It re-opened as a Provisional School in the county of Bourke in January 1954 until June 1957. (1) Provisional Schools were opened in areas of smaller populations where insufficient children attended to justify the opening of a full public school. By 1953 ten students were required to maintain a provisional school. Usually the Department of Public Instruction supplied the teacher, books and other teaching materials and the parents provided the premises for the School.
The School was converted into a public school in July 1957 when the classification 'Provisional School" was discontinued and the remaining provisional schools with a pupil population of at least nine were converted into public schools.
Walleroobie Public School closed in September 1969. (2)
